Minister Catherine Byrne assumes responsibility for Seniors Alert Scheme

Catherine Byrne TD, Minister of State for Communities and the National Drugs Strategy this week (on 15 May 2017) assumed responsibility for the Seniors Alert Scheme and also the Scheme of Supports for Volunteering.

Minister Byrne said: “This Government’s commitment to older people and indeed, the Seniors Alert Scheme, is demonstrated by the commitment in the Programme for Government, which provides for significant investment in the Scheme to provide additional safety and peace of mind for those living at home. I am delighted to have the opportunity to develop the Scheme, through which more than 7,200 older citizens received a personal monitored alarm in 2016”.

Responsibility for the management and administration of the scheme transferred from the Department to Pobal in September 2015.  The Department retains responsibility for the strategic policy direction of the Scheme.

A provision of €2.3m has been allocated to the Seniors Alert Scheme in 2017.
